When to Use A or An is an interactive grammar game that teaches children aged 6–9 how to choose a or an by listening to the first sound of the very next word. It matches Year 3 English (KS2).
Players join Puff the Sound Express, whose two carriages are a and an. They spot the vowel letters (a, e, i, o, u), hear how “a apple” bumps while “an apple” glides smoothly, and drag words into the right carriage. Then they meet tricky words where the letter and the sound don’t match, such as a unicorn (it starts with a “y” sound) and an hour (the h is silent).
In the last station, adding a describing word flips the choice: an elephant becomes a tiny elephant. A 10-question Golden Ticket challenge checks everything. Every line is read aloud, and each wrong answer gets a friendly spoken hint.
Use a before a word that starts with a consonant sound, as in a dog, and an before a word that starts with a vowel sound, as in an egg. The choice depends on the sound you hear, not just the first letter you see.
It is a unicorn. Although unicorn begins with the vowel letter u, we say it with a “y” sound (you-ni-corn), which is a consonant sound, so it takes a. The same goes for a uniform and a ukulele.
We say an hour because the h in hour is silent, so the word starts with a vowel sound, like “our”. In horse you can hear the h, so it is a horse.
The game suits children aged 6 to 9, and it matches the Year 3 English curriculum, where pupils learn to choose a or an. Younger children can play with an adult, and older children can use it for quick revision.
The game has four short stations and a 10-question Golden Ticket challenge, taking about 25 minutes in total. Every instruction is read aloud, and children can start at any station from the map and come back later.
