What you'll learn

  • An angle is an amount of turn, not a length
  • Every corner of a 2-D shape is an angle
  • A right angle is a square corner and a quarter turn
  • Two right angles make a half turn; four make a whole turn
  • How to make and use a folded-paper right-angle checker
  • Whether an angle is greater or less than a right angle

What the chapters cover in the national curriculum in England:

  1. Year 3 maths: Recognise angles as a property of shape or a description of a turn
  2. Year 3 maths: Identify right angles, recognise that 2 right angles make a half-turn, 3 make three-quarters of a turn and 4 a complete turn; identify whether angles are greater than or less than a right angle

About this adventure

Angles and Right Angles is an interactive maths game that teaches children aged 7–9 what an angle is, how to spot right angles and how to compare other angles with them, following the Year 3 national curriculum in England.

Children drag a turning arm to see that an angle is an amount of turn, and find out that longer arms do not make a bigger angle. They tap the corners of 2-D shapes to find their angles, then fold paper on screen to make a right-angle checker and test real objects, including tilted ones.

With Pip the robot, they turn one right angle at a time to see that two right angles make a half turn, three a three-quarter turn and four a whole turn. Spoken narration, captions, hints and a final 10-question challenge help every idea stick.

Questions and answers

What is a right angle, in simple words?

A right angle is a square corner, like the corner of a book or a window. It is the same as a quarter turn, and we mark it with a small square drawn inside the corner.

How many right angles make a half turn and a whole turn?

Two right angles make a half turn, three make a three-quarter turn and four make a whole turn. After a half turn you face the opposite way; after a whole turn you are back where you started.

How can children check if an angle is a right angle?

Fold a scrap of paper in half, then in half again so the folds line up, to make a right-angle checker. If an angle fits the folded corner exactly it is a right angle; if it fits inside it is smaller, and if it sticks out it is bigger.

What age is this angles game for?

It is designed for children aged 7 to 9 and matches the Year 3 maths curriculum in England. An optional warm-up on clockwise, anticlockwise and simple turns helps younger or less confident players get started.

What does the game include and how long does it take?

It has five chapters, an optional warm-up and a 10-question final challenge, and takes about 35 minutes to play through. Children can pick any chapter from the map and come back to it later.
