About this adventure

Word Class Sorting Office is an interactive grammar game that teaches children aged 9–11 to recognise the eight word classes: nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, determiners, prepositions and conjunctions. It follows the Year 6 English curriculum in England, and Dot the robot reads every line aloud with captions.

Words arrive as parcels, and players tap, drag and type to sort them into colour-coded chutes by the job each word does. Along the way they meet abstract nouns (ideas such as bravery), modal verbs like should, and determiners, which come before a noun to show which one or how many.

The big idea is that a word's class depends on its job in the sentence: after is a preposition in 'after lunch' but a conjunction in 'after we ate'. Players also use these terms to improve sentences and explain a writer's choices.

Questions and answers

What are the 8 word classes in English?

The eight word classes taught at KS2 are nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, determiners, prepositions and conjunctions. Each group is defined by the job its words do in a sentence, such as naming, doing or being, describing, or linking.

What is the difference between a determiner and a pronoun?

A determiner comes before a noun, while a pronoun stands in place of one. In 'my coat', my is a determiner, but in 'the coat is mine', mine is a pronoun. Words such as this can be either, depending on whether a noun follows.

How can you tell if 'after' is a preposition or a conjunction?

Look at what comes next. If a noun or noun phrase follows, as in 'after lunch', it is a preposition. If a clause with a verb follows, as in 'after we ate', it is a subordinating conjunction.

What age is this word classes game for?

It is designed for children aged 9 to 11 and matches Year 6 English in England, where word classes are revised before the KS2 grammar, punctuation and spelling test. Every line is read aloud with captions, so less confident readers can follow.

What does the word classes game include and how long does it take?

It has six chapters, each with an animated introduction, hands-on sorting activities and a three-question check, plus a 12-question Grand Sorting Challenge and an optional refresher on phrases and clauses. Playing everything takes about an hour, and children can start any chapter from the map.
