About this adventure

Perimeter of Shapes is an interactive maths game that teaches children aged 7–9 how to measure the perimeter of simple 2-D shapes, following the Year 3 national curriculum in England.

Players learn that perimeter is the total distance all the way around the edge of a shape. They then find it in three ways: counting the 1 cm edges around shapes on squared paper, measuring each side with a ruler from the zero mark, and adding side lengths given in centimetres (cm) and metres (m). Along the way they build a fence, guide Pip the ant around a house and tick off each side so none is missed.

Every instruction is spoken aloud, and hints appear after a wrong answer. Two warm-ups, which can be skipped, practise reading a ruler and adding several numbers. A final eight-question quiz checks what has been learned.

Questions and answers

What is perimeter, in simple words?

Perimeter is the total distance all the way around the edge of a flat shape. If you walked along every side and ended back where you started, the distance you walked would be the perimeter. It is measured in units of length, such as centimetres or metres.

How do you find the perimeter of a shape?

To find the perimeter, add together the lengths of all of a shape's sides. If the sides are not labelled, measure each one with a ruler, lining the start of the side up with the 0 mark. On centimetre squared paper, count every edge around the outside instead.

What is the difference between perimeter and area?

Perimeter is the distance around the outside of a shape, while area is the amount of flat space inside it. A fence around a field needs the perimeter, but covering the field with grass seed needs the area. On squared paper, perimeter counts edges and area counts squares.

What age is this perimeter game for?

The game is designed for children aged 7 to 9. It matches the Year 3 maths objective in England to measure the perimeter of simple 2-D shapes. Older children who want a refresher can also play it comfortably.

What does the perimeter game include and how long does it take?

The game has four chapters and an eight-question quiz, and takes about 35 minutes to play from start to finish. Each chapter opens with a short animated introduction, and players can start from any chapter on the trail map.
