About this adventure

Animals and Their Babies is an interactive science game that teaches children aged 5–7 how animals, including humans, have offspring that grow into adults. It follows Year 2 science in the national curriculum for England.

Guided by Hoot the owl, children tap, drag and sort as they play. They learn that offspring means an animal's babies or young, and meet names such as lamb, foal, cygnet and joey. They watch a person grow from baby to toddler, child, teenager and adult. They also find out that some babies, like tadpoles and caterpillars, look very different from their parents. Then they hatch a chick, raise a frog from frogspawn and turn each change into a life cycle wheel.

Every line is read aloud with captions, and a ten-question quiz at the end checks what they remember.

Questions and answers

What are animal offspring, in simple words?

Offspring are the babies or young of an animal. A kitten is a cat's offspring, and a human baby is the offspring of its parents. All offspring grow and change until they become adults.

Do all baby animals look like their parents?

No, some baby animals look very different from their parents. A lamb looks like a small sheep, but a tadpole has a tail and no legs before it changes into a frog, and a caterpillar later becomes a butterfly.

What is a baby kangaroo called?

A baby kangaroo is called a joey. When it is born it is only about the size of a jelly bean, and it carries on growing safely inside its mother's pouch for several months.

What age is this animals and their babies game for?

It is made for children aged 5 to 7 and matches Year 2 science in the national curriculum for England. Spoken narration and captions mean children who are still learning to read can play on their own.

What does the game include and how long does it take?

There are five short chapters, each with an animated introduction, hands-on activities and a recap, plus a ten-question quiz. Playing everything takes about 35 minutes, and children can start any chapter from the map.
