About this adventure
Tenths Pier is an interactive maths game that teaches children aged 7β9 tenths for Year 3: what a tenth is, how to count up and down in tenths, and how tenths come from dividing by 10.
At each seaside stall the player does the maths with their hands. They cut a chocolate bar into 10 equal pieces, hop a frog along a number line from 0 to 1, snip ribbon at the right mark on a metre stick, deal coins into 10 treasure chests and share pizzas between 10 crabs. A narrator reads every instruction aloud.
Key ideas are named clearly. The denominator, 10, shows how many equal parts make the whole, and the numerator shows how many parts we have. Ten tenths make one whole, one tenth of a metre is 10 cm, and 3 Γ· 10 = 3/10. A 10-question Big Wheel challenge checks everything at the end.
Questions and answers
What is a tenth, in simple words?
A tenth is one of 10 equal parts of a whole. If you cut a bar of chocolate into 10 pieces that are all the same size, each piece is one tenth, written 1/10.
How do you count in tenths?
You count in tenths by adding one tenth each time: 1/10, 2/10, 3/10 and so on. The top number goes up by one while the bottom number stays 10, and 10/10 is the same as 1 whole.
How do you find one tenth of a number?
To find one tenth of a number, divide it by 10, which is the same as sharing it into 10 equal groups. For example, one tenth of 40 is 4, because 40 Γ· 10 = 4.
What age is this tenths game for?
The game is made for children aged 7 to 9, matching Year 3 in the national curriculum for England. Older children who are unsure about tenths can use it to catch up, and a short warm-up recaps halves and quarters first.
What does the Tenths Pier game include and how long does it take?
It has five spoken, hands-on chapters, an optional fractions warm-up and a 10-question final challenge, taking about 35 minutes in total. Each chapter can also be played on its own.
